The sizes are your high hip measurement. If you plan to wear theskirt higher or lower, measure around wherever you plan for the skirt to sit and use the size closest to that measurement. If you need a larger or smaller size, knit more or less repeats of the pattern. Each repeat = 4 inches around the waistband.
The skirt begins to flare out as soon as the waistband is done, and there is a lot of width wise stretch in the finished skirt. You may need to change the lining to suit your hips if there is an above average difference between your hips and where you will wear the waistband, but the knit part should be ok.
If you do not know how to sew, you can also buy a slip or an elastic waist skirt in a colour that will look good through your Cotlin. Make sure it is a size that fits nicely – if it is too loose the weight of the knit skirt will pull it off. You can stitch the knit skirt to the slip rather than making a casing for an elastic waist with a slip.
The fabric is easier to work with if it is 100% cotton, and the colour can be the same as your yarn, or a contrasting colour you want to show through. Only use stretchy fabric if you know what you are doing!
Because this is a heavy skirt, you will want the skirt to be the right size once it has “fallen down. So knit a swatch in seed stitch, wash it, and pull it lengthwise firmly. Then allow it to dry, give it a gentle pull to make sure it is in the right position, iron it, and THEN measure your gauge. Otherwise you may not be able to get the same stitch and row count. The skirt will look much too wide, and a little too short when it is freshly knit and first washed. It becomes the right size when you give a firm lengthwise pull before it dries and is ironed.
