These instructions were written for me by a knitter on my KAL, bless her, and I am putting them {the instructions} here for easier access.
I found the KP instructions difficult to work with and these worked very well.
Here are some magic loop videos for you to watch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtBSmxGomPkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-aWWES8Rxchttp://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7192479157536529291These modified directions are for doing one root at a time. So first cast on 12 sts. Once you cast on the 12. Slide the sts down and pull the cable through the middle of the sts. This will give you 6 sts on each side of the cable. Push the sts back up towards the needles. You should have the working yarn on the backside of the cable. On the front side of the cable push those sts onto the needle. There will be a cable loop on the left side. The sts on the backside will remain on the cable. Pull the back needle out enough so you will be able to use it to knit with. You will have a loop on the left and semi loop and needle on the right. Join your yarn. Becareful not to twist the sts when you join. To join your yarn it will be just like you do when you join in the round - the last st on the back needle will be joined with the first st on the front needle. Don't pull your working yarn super tight but it should be fairly snug as when you start a new needle on dpns.
Here are the instructions for ONE root:
Rnd 1-3: Knit
Rnd 4: K1,M1, K2, M1, K1. 2 times (1 time on front cable; 1 time on back cable). (16 sts - 8 on front of cable, 8 on back)
Rnd 5-6: Knit
Rnd 7: K1,M1, K4, M1, K1. 2 times (1 time on front cable; 1 time on back cable). (20 sts - 10 on front of cable, 10 on back)
Rnd 8-9: Knit
Rnd 10: K1,M1, K6, M1, K1. 2 times (1 time on front cable; 1 time on back cable). (24 sts - 12 on front of cable, 12 on back)
Rnd 11-12: Knit
Rnd 13: K1,M1, K8, M1, K1. 2 times (1 time on front cable; 1 time on back cable). (28 sts - 14 on front of cable, 14 on back)
Rnd 14-15: Knit
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Place on stitch holders or dpns with point protectors on the end. Do second root.
Rnd 16: Knit across front of second root. Join first root. Make sure long tail is between the roots. Knit across front of first root. Now both fronts will be attached and on the magic loop. Knit across back of first root. Join back of second root and knit across back of second.
I think you should be able to follow the rest of the directions.

I hope you are well. My son lost his tooth a few weeks ago, and has 3 other loose ones!!! He loves the pillow! My MIL is using the magic loop for a pair of socks, she likes the technique! Happy Knitting :)
