I ordered a set of the nickle plated option set and a pair of the harmony to test....I really like the feel of the harmony better than the nickle plated ones (as I am a 'pusher')....but I noticed that one of my harmony needles had a ridge (like in a pencil) where it begins to taper (the other was totally smooth) .....I feel the difference especially when that needle on my right hand....I seem to need to push the needle a tad harder....so I called Knitpicks customer service to ask for a replacement pair but also ordered a whole new set of the harmony options plus a pair each of the #13 and #15.....I am so bombed out as almost all of the interchangeable harmony needles plus the #11 replacement pair have the ridge that I complained about (the #13 and #15 are totally smooth)......I have several pairs of circular bamboo needles and they are smooth through the tips....SO am I just being picky or these ridges are out of the norm. I feel like I need to bring out my sanding papers to smooth them all out BUT then I may lose the shinny coat.....does anybody else notice these ridges on your harmony needles? What should I do? TIA!
I received my Harmony set for Christmas and love them. However. . . I hate that word. I've had to have 3 sets of points and 1 cable replaced already and one of the needles that was replaced is bad. It will screw on but just keeps on spinning instead of locking into place when I use the key. The inside must be stripped. Has anyone else had this problem. I'll keep ordering because I love the set. I prefer knitting with wood and the Harmony set is so much easier to knit with than my bamboo. Guess I'll be giving customer service another call tomorrow, I just hate to keep bothering them with one needle at time. Oh well. . .
KnitPicks, I am certain, would rather you call them every day and "bother" them about any problem over not knowing you had a problem with any product you'd purchased for them.
If there is a problem with the Harmony Needles, they cannot permanently address the issue if no one tells them there is a flaw in the design... I'm sure they've got people trying to re-engineer that, because the product is worthy of the investment in time and energy, but more so, because KnitPicks customers deserve the very best quality they can create.
Don't play with the issue... call. Your satisfaction as a customer is far more important than any "inconvenience" resulting from any number of calls regarding a product that doesn't function within reasonably expected parameters. If you can't use it, it ought to be replaced.
I am just hoping that customers will not lose patience with this recurring problem before it can be permanently corrected, for all sorts of reasons. Mostly, to be honest, because I am waiting to get a set myself until it appears the issue has been fixed... and I know it will be. :-)
Call as often as you need to and don't give yourself permission to feel like you are being a "pest" or something by "complaining"... Its called "CustomerService" for a reason. I'm sure the staff considers it an honor to address the issue and service your need. If there is a problem with the needle, it isn't your fault and you didn't cause it, so it is not logical to feel shame or guilt by bringing it to the attention of KnitPicks...
This isn't like a lot of places you've shopped! KnitPicks really CARES about what they sell and about who buys what they sell! :-)
Not only that, when you get someone on the line--which usually happens quickly--they understand what you're saying and you can understand them. I think they're even in this country! I went ahead and ordered the entire set of Harmony Options. I know that if there's a problem, they will take care of it. I already have old circs I bought in the '80s I can use if something goes wrong, but I like the Harmonys so much better, and the cables are so flexible. I've been thinking, the problem may not be a design flaw. It's basically the same as the nickel-plated needles, which seem to work fine. It may be due to manufacturing errors in the factory. Anyway, I'm sure KP is on it. Happy knitting! --Peggy
If I didn't already have a full compliment of the nickel ones, plus Addi Turbos on top of that, I would have already ordered a full compliment of Harmony needles as well... issues and all. As it is, I am excessively "needle rich" and to even consider buying one more circular needle of any sort is the definition of greed and gluttony. That being said, I will, at some point, partake of those two deadly sins. LOL! I'm just using these issues as a lame means of fending off temptation!!! It is entirely a meager attempt at self control! [And in the interest of full disclosure, I do confess I have ordered (and received) a set of 10.75mm Harmony tips to test out. I know. So much for self control.]
Regardless what the root problem may be... design deficiency or manufacturing malfunction... KnitPicks stands firmly behind the integrity of their name and reputation. You can depend on them to tirelessly, and if need be, relentlessly, replace any part that is not functioning as it ought to and be happy to do it.
The fact you do speak to an actual native-English-speaking United States citizen when you call is just plain icing on the cake! I have stopped using some businesses because I can't understand the person I speak to when I call and they can't understand me. How can customer service be provided when neither party understands half of the conversation... and it may not even be the same half!???!
Hi!
I work in customer service for Knit Picks. We do guarantee our products, and if anything is broken or defective, please don't hesitate to let us know and we will send you a replacement at no charge right away. You aren't bothering us, it's our job to help you!
We recently figured out that our needles are defective less than 0.5% of the time, but sometimes needles break or get past our quality control and we really appreciate it when you let us know about a problem so we can fix it. Our phone number is 1-800-574-1323 and we are open Monday through Friday from 5 am until 6 pm Pacific Standard Time and from 6 am until 3 pm on Saturdays.
Has anyone had any problems with the durability of their interchangables? My most frequently used tips, the 9's, have lost the ability to stay tight and one of them came out of it's metal seat last night. I do use them a lot. I am considering getting them as fixed needles because I love the points so much.
Yes, I've had a few needles come out of the holder and 1 cable break but I really don't consider that a negative. I knew about these existing problems when I ordered them and just happen to have a received a set with these problems. Would I order another set knowing these problems exist, you betcha! I love the way they knit and the way the cable doesn't curl like a pigs tail. Customer service has been wonderful and they've replaced every defective piece I've had so far. My only concern is that they'll get tired of hearing from me and
"cut me off" but I think the likely hood of that happening is non-existent. Don't let the problems keep you from ordering the set. I'm beginning to wonder if these are problems that are just inherent in interchangable needle sets. I've even heard that the $150 Addi set is experiencing some of the same problems.
N: I agree. The Harmony needles haven't been out that long and are fairly innovative. I would be surprised if they didn't have some problems. I'm sure they will get the manufacturing perfected and correct the problems. In the meantime, the nice people at customer service will look after us. --Peggy
I do have to say, I LOVE the way I don't have to fight and wrestle with pig tail curls like I do with Addi Turbo cables and that's one of the main reasons I choose KP over AT most often now... I love the needles and joins of the Addi Turbo but there has, on occasion been "colorful" language flowing over the cables. I try to remember to "steam the cables" when starting projects with ATs when I knew that would be an issue, but ATs remember where they were and will go back over the course of the project... KPs behave themselves and WANT to do what you want them to do and I've never even thought about giving them a steam bath before beginning a project! LOL!
Even if I could afford Addi Turbos now, and my financial situation has radically changed since I first bought them and I cannot, I would still purchase KP needles now... any of them. They are good quality, fairly priced, the company stands behind the product and will cheerfully and repeatedly replace any part of the needle you have a functional issue with as long as you own them and they are in business, and they perform just as well... in some aspects, better... than the Addi Turbos I've used since 2003. I don't regret buying AT... but if KP needles had been around then, I'd have bought them instead.
THREE Things on My Mind Keep Me From Buying Harmony Wood Circular Needles and How You Can Help Me Make a Decision:
I Do NOT want to purchase the metal circulars. I am allergic to nickel and I prefer wood anyway.
1) Which circulars are the ones that actually BREAK the most: Fixed or Interchangeable?
2) I am not sure what the issues are with the Interchangeables. Do they actually come apart at the wood-metal-joint? OR is it that they won't stay dependably screwed to the cable?
3) How many of you are having trouble with needles having a ridge in the wood where it meets the metal? This problem is just unacceptable.
It appears that quite a few of knitters are having the same problems with their circular needles. Just don't glue them without telling Customer Service. They need to know about your experiences with their products.
So I can know what to expect, SHOULD I decide to buy some circulars from KnitPicks, PLEASE be specific when you describe your experiences with these needles. I just can't afford Addi circulars (their pricing is outrageous!), but I don't want to buy a bunch of frustration, either. I really want to buy some circulars and I would like to purchase them from KnitPicks. Thanks!
